The first round of the South African Open went to Wallie Coetsee who shot a course record of 7-under-
par 65. From the eighth hole Coetsee birdied six out of the next seven holes to move into first place
with a one stroke lead over Paul Eales, Des Terblanche and Greg Owen. Eales, Terblanche and Owen all
shot 6-under-par 66s. Owen, who has been experiencing back problems, spent the winter working out
with martial arts and is now playing excellently. Finishing three strokes off the lead was a group of nine
including Retief Goosen and Nico Van Rensburg. David Frost, the defending champion, shot a 1-under-
par 71 finishing with eighteen others.

The second round lead was shared by Darren Fichardt and Paul Eales at 9-under-par 135. Finishing one
stroke behind were some of the biggest names on the European Tour; Don Gammon, Ian Woosnam
and Wallie Coetsee, all at 8-under-par 136. Woosnam, who hasn't had a victory since 1997, shot a third
round 6-under-par 66. Lee Westwood stood alone in sixth place after a second round 68 for a total of
7-under-par 137. The defending champion, David Frost, had a two round total of 147 to miss the cut by
a three stroke margin.

In the third round the local, Darren Fichardt, took sole possession of the lead by one stroke. Fichardt
shot a third round 67 that included two bogeys, five birdies, and one eagle for a three round total of 14-
under-par 202. Second place went to Des Terblanche with a third round 65 for a total of 13-under-par
203. Terblanche and Fichardt swapped the lead for most of the round until Fichardt birdied the 18th hole
to take the lead. Paul Eales dropped back from his share of the second round's first place to third place
after shooting a 69. Finishing five shots off the lead was a group of seven at 9-under-par that included
Retief Goosen, Mathias Gronberg and Greg Owen. Goosen, who previously won this event, shot a 67.

In the final round on Sunday a four-way battle developed for first place between Mathias Gronberg, Nick
Price, Darren Fichardt and Ricardo Gonzalez that ended with Gronberg on top. Gronberg birdied the 18th
hole for a one stroke victory and a final score of 14-under-par 274 for $154,208 and his third European
Tour victory. Price, Fichardt and Gonzalez finished at 13-under 275 for $75,900. Finishing with a share
of fifth place were Tjaart Van der Walt, Jean-Francois Remesy, Ashley Roestoff, Retief Goosen and John
Mellor with 12-under-par 276s for $29,748. Play was delayed for two hours and forty-five minutes due to
an electrical storm.
