| In the first round of the Welsh Open Robert Coles shot a 64 for first place and a 3-stroke lead over Ivo Giner, Iain Pyman and Mark James. Both Pyman and Giner birdied the last hole for a 67 and their place in second while James shot a 5-under-par 31 on the back nine for his. Fifth place went to Anders Hansen, Ian Garbutt and Ian Woosnam with 68s. Woosnam had only one bogey which was on the 15th where he missed the green. Finishing with 69s for eighth place was a group of eight that included Roger Chapman and David Park. In the second round Mark McNulty and Ian Woosnam tied for the lead with totals of 137. McNulty, who has 46 victories worldwide, finished with a second round 67 today after shooting an eagle and two birdies to finish his round. Third place went to Ross McFarlane and Steen Tinning who both shot 68s for totals of 138. Finishing in fifth place was Ian Garbutt, Fredrik Jacobson, Nick O'Hern, Mark James and Raymond Russell with 139s. Six players missed the cut including Scott Rowe and Tom Gillis. In the the third round Ian Woosnam took sole possession of the lead with a 66 for a 13-under-par 203 total. Woosnam, trying to become the first Wleshman to win the open, shot a 30 on the front nine for a one-stroke lead. Second place went to Steen Tinning with a 12-under-par 204 total. Tinning has not won in 14-years on the tour and had never been higher than 63rd on the European money list. Finishing with 10-under-par 206 were Ian Garbutt, David Howell and Henrik Nystrom for third place. Sixth place went to Mick O'Hern, Carl Suneson and Mark James with 8-under-par 208 totals. In the final round on Sunday Steen Tinning shot 69 for a 15-under-par 273 total and $199,838. Tinning won for his first ever European Tour event and earned almost $150,000 more than any of his previous checks. Second place went to David Howell who carded a 14-under-par 274 for $133,220. Third place was shared between Fredrik Jacobson and Ian Woosnam with 12-under-par 276s. Woosnam, the second and third round leader, shot a 73 and played shaky all day. Finishing five strokes behind the lead were Nick O'Hern, Mark McNulty and Philip Price with 10-under-par 278s for $42,925. |
