In the opening round of the 2001 Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open Paul Lawrie, Paul McGinley and Gary
Orr all shot 5-under-par 67s to share the lead. McGinley shot four birdies over his last six holes for his
spot while Orr shot six birdies and a bogey on his 2nd hole. Finishing one stroke back in second place
were Jamie Donaldson, Mark Pilkington, Graham Rankin, Roger Wessels and Roger Winchester with 4-
under 68s. Ninth place was shared by Scott Gardiner, Simon Hurd, Daren Lee, Mikael Lundberg, David
Lynn and Andrew Oldcorn with 3-under-par 69s. The first round was rained out after just thirty minutes
worth of play and was finished on Friday.

In the second round on Saturday Paul Lawrie, Daren Lee and Paul McGinley all shared the lead with 6-
under-par 138s. Lawrie and McGinley, the first round co-leaders, shot second round 71s for their spots
in first while Lee birdied the 15th and 17th holes for a consecutive 69 and his spot. Finishing one stroke
back in fourth place were Jamie Donaldson, Anders Forsbrand and Mark Pilkington with 5-under 139s.
Anders Hansen took 7th place with a 2nd round 68 for a 4-under 140 total while Nic Henning, Thomas
Levet, Nick O'Hern, Gary Orr, Steve Webster and Roger Wessels shared eigth place with 3-under 141s.
The tournament had been shortened to 54-holes with the third round to be completed on Sunday after
the rain delayed the first two rounds.

The third round was canceled on Sunday after heavy overnight rain left the course unplayable. The
second round co-leaders Paul Lawrie, Daren Lee and Paul McGinley competed in the three man sudden
death playoff to determine the winner. McGinley pared the fifth playoff hole to earn his fourth victory on
the European PGA Tour and move into the eighth spot on the European Ryder Cup standings. Lowrie
was eliminated on the 2nd hole and Lee shot a bogey on the 5th hole giving both men second place.
