In the first round of the 2001 Mercedes-Benz South African Open Hennie Otto shot a 7-under-par 65 for
the lead. Otto kept control of his temper after the infamous club snapping incident at the South African
Masters and played very well after missing the cut in his last two events. Finishing one stroke back in
second place was Ignacio Garrido with a 6-under-par 66. Third place was shared by Bradley Dredge, Greg
Owen, Paolo Quirici and Roger Wessels with 5-under-par 67s. Finishing three stokes behind the leader
for seventh place were Ricardo Gonzalez, James Kingston and Brenden Pappas, all carding 4-under-par
68s. Simon Dyson, Nasho Kamungeremu, Martin Maritz, Mark McNulty, Titch Moore, Grant Muller and
Wayne Riley all finished with 3-under-par 69s. Mathias Gronberg, the defending champion, shot 76 with
eight others in his opening round.

In the second round Hennie Otto shot 70 for a 9-under-par 135 total to hold onto his lead. Otto carded
a 38 on his first nine but followed up with a 32 on his second nine for a one-stroke lead over Greg Owen
and Roger Wessels. Owen and Wessels both shot second round 69s for 8-under 136 totals. Owen was in
position to share the lead until he bogeyed the 18th. Finishing in 4th place with 7-under-par 137s were
Tobias Dier and Bradley Dredge. Sixth place went to David Howell and Mikael Lundberg with 6-under-par
138s. Thomas Bjorn, Ignacio Garrido, Retief Goosen and Bobby Lincoln shared 8th place with 5-under-
par 139s. The highest ranking player in the field, Darren Clarke, missed the cut by 10 strokes.

In the third round Hennie Otto stayed in front by two strokes after shooting a 71 for a 10-under-par 206
total. Otto who has only finished once in the top ten, was in position to win going into the final round.
Finishing in second place was Roger Wessels with a third round 72 for an 8-under-par 208 total. Third
place was shared by Justin Rose and Mark McNulty with 7-under-par 209s. Rose carded the lowest score
of the round with 68 while McNulty shot 69. Finishing in 5th place four strokes off the lead were Thomas
Bjorn, Simon Dyson, Justin Hobday and Greg Owen with 6-under 210s. Ninth place was shared by Markus
Brier, Bradley Dredge, David Howell and Mikael Lundberg with 5-under-par 211s. Brier shot a third round
68, Howell and Lundberg 73s, and Dredge carded a 74.

In the final round Mark McNulty shot a 71 for an 8-under-par 280 and the win. McNulty overcame a four
year victory drought by one stroke after an excellent 24-foot putt on his final hole. Justin Rose took
second place with a final round 72 for a 7-under-par 281 total. Third place was shared by Thomas Bjorn
and Roger Wessels with 6-under-par 282s. Mikael Lundberg and Hennie Otto shared fifth place with 5-
under-par 283s. Lundberg shot a final round 72 while Otto had a 77 to fall out of the lead. Finishing four
strokes off the lead with 4-under-par 284s were Malcolm Mackenzie and Bradford Vaughan.
