| The first round of the Byron Nelson Classic ended in a tie between Blaine McCallister and Davis Love III with 4-under-par 66s. Love, who is winless in his last 53 tournaments, has decided to start concentrating on playing golf and stop worrying about beating others. Finishing two strokes back was a six-way tie that included Sergio Garcia, U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen, Kevin Sutherland, Jerry Smith, John Huston, and Billy Andrade, all with 2-under-par 68s. One-stroke back was a group of ten at 69 including Vijay Singh, the Masters Champion. Thursday's course conditions in Irving, Texas were made even more difficult by a combination of hot weather and wind gusts that reached as high as 38 mph. In Friday's round Davis Love III began to take control of the tournament. Love finished his second round with a 7-under-par 63 and two-round total of 11-under-par 129. Love has the largest 36-hole advantage in the Classics history with his 4-stroke lead. Four-strokes behind Love is John Huston who is in second place after shooting a 65 for a two-round total of 7-under-par 133. Third place was held in a six-way tie between Glen Day, former PGA Championship winner Mark Brooks, Neal Lancaster, Jesper Parnevik, Blaine McCallister, and Kevin Sutherland with totals of 5-under-par 135s. Woods was in danger of missing the second cut of his career until the back nine where he made a couple of putts to finish with a 67, which was enough to return him to an even-par 140. In the third round Saturday Davis Love III shot a 1-over-par 71 to loose his four stroke lead and finish tied for first with John Huston. Huston shot a 3-under-par 67 for a three round total of 10-under-par 200. Finishing three strokes back was Jesper Parnevik with a 68 and a chance for his second win this year. Phil Mickelson trailed Parnevik by four strokes after shooting a 68 for a total of 6-under-par 204. The strong winds caused problems for the players again. The final round ended in a playoff between Jesper Parnevik, Phil Mickelson, and Davis Love III. A three man playoff was the biggest in the tournaments history. Parnevik made par on the third extra hole for his second victory of the year and $720,000. Parnevik has had four PGA Tour victory's in his career and will be ranked in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Mickelson and Love finished with 11-under-par 269s and won $352,000. John Huston and Tiger Woods both finished one stroke behind at 10-under-par 270s for $176,000. Woods, who was seven shots back at the beginning of the final-round almost came back to win with an eagle from the fairway and his lowest final round, a 63, as a professional. He finished in the top five for the 16th time out of his last 19 tournaments. |
