The largest of all United States
Golf Association events is the
venerable U.S. Open, which is
celebrating its 100th anniver-
sary at Pebble Beach this year.
The first U.S. Open was played
on October 4, 1895 on a nine-
hole course at the Newport Golf
and Country Club. The event
was won by 21-year-old Horace
Rawlins. Rawlins, an English
golf professional, scored 91-81-173 playing the nine hole
course four times in the 36-
hole competition.

Rawlins played a gutta percha
ball and won $150 of the $355 total purse. Finishing in second
place was Willie Dunn with a
175 total for $100. Third place
was shared by A.W. Smith and
James Foulis who shot 176s
for $50. The competition in
the inaugural year consisted of
ten professionals and a single
amateur who completed four
rounds of the course in just
one day.

Since this beginning of the US
Open in 1895, the tournament
has been played in every year
except for a two-year break,
from 1917 to 1918, for World War I and a four-year break from 1942 to 1945 for World War II.

In it's first decade the Open
was primarily held for U.S.
amateurs and a growing British
population of immigrant golf
professionals. The American
amateurs held their own.

In the following three decades
the Open had several amateur
winners, including the legendary
Bobby Jones, Francis Quimet
and John Goodman. Francis
Quimet defeated famous British
golf professionals Ted Ray and
Harry Vardon, who had won the
tournament in 1900, after a
playoff in the 1913 Open.

Bobby Jones won the US Open
four times- 1923, 1926, 1929,
1930- while Goodman won the
1933 tournament and was the
last amateur to win at the US
Open.

The first US Open nationally
televised was the 1954 event
and was also the first time the
course was roped from tee to
green. The format of the Open
has changed several times in
its 100 year history. The 1895
36-hole format that was then
played in a single day lasted
until it changed to its present
format in 1965 to include four
18-hole rounds played on four
consecutive days, if weather
permitted.

Since the first US Open many records have been set that will
never be broken. For example,
the tournament record was set by James Foulis in 1896 of 152, a tough score to beat with a 72
hole format.

Jack Nicklaus, who will be playing
in his 44th consecutive US Open
this week, sets a record believed
to last for decades. His closest
rival, Gene Sarazen, participated
in 33 US Opens. Jack Nicklaus
has won the Open four times, in
1962, 1967, 1972 and 1980. He
has also finished in second four
times: 1962, 1968, 1971 and in
1982. Nicklaus has played 158
total rounds in the US Open with
his lowest being a 63 in 1980,
which represents the lowest 18-
hole score in the history of the
event. He also holds the 72-hole
record with a 272 shot in 1980.

Jack Nicklaus furnished one of
the most memorable shots in
the history of the tournament in
the 1972 Open when a one-iron
tee shot hit the flagstick on the
17th, stopping five inches from
the cup at Pebble. From 1971 to
1982 Jack never finished worse
than 11th with two wins and two
2nd place finishes.

With Jack Nicklaus's completion
of this year's Open he will have
completed the US Open in six
different decades. He has a total combined tour earnings, PGA
and Senior PGA, of $8,100,580.
Nicklaus has been named Golfer
of the Century twice and received
the PGA Player of the Year Award
five times.
The best all time money winner
in the history of the US Open
is the defending champion, the
late Payne Stewart who played
in 16 tournaments and finished
in the top 10 to record earnings of $1,455,880.

The youngest winner of the US
Open was the 19-year-old John
McDermott who won in 1911.

The oldest to win was Hale Irwin
in 1990 at age 45.

This years US Open marks the
100th playing of the prestigious
tournament and the event will
be covered like never before.
The Open will receive 28 hours
of live television coverage from
NBC and ESPN in Eastern time
zones on June 15-16 from 3-5
pm on NBC and then from 5-
10:30 pm on ESPN. Saturday
and Sunday's coverage, June
17-18, will be from 1:30 to 8pm
on NBC. Play is scheduled from
June 15th through the 18th
with a complete 18 hole round
scheduled for each day, weather
permitting. If a tie occurs after 72 holes, an 18-hole playoff will take place on Monday, June 19, starting at noon.
