| In the opening round of the of the 100th US Open on Thursday, Tiger Woods finished on top. Woods shot a 6-under-par 65 for the lowest score ever shot in a US Open played at Pebble Beach. Jimenez shot three straight birdies on the front nine, then finished with an 18-foot birdie putt. Third went to John Huston with 4-under-par 67 for his best start in a US Open. Finishing one stroke back from Huston was Bobby Clampett. Clampett, who grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, birdied four of his first ten holes. Hal Sutton, possibly shooting the best shot of the day, sunk a 136 yard shot on the opening hole for an eagle. Sutton finished in fifth with Angel Cabrera and Rocco Mediate at 2-under-par 69.
