| In the second round of the 2000 US Open, Tiger Woods expanded his lead to six strokes. Woods shot a 69 for a two round total of 8-under-par 134. Woods six shot second round lead was the largest in the Open's history. His two round total of 134 also ties the record for the lowest 36 hole score, set by Jack Nicklaus in the 1980 US Open Championship. Woods second round consisted of six birdies and four bogeys. Finishing six strokes behind Woods were Thomas Bjorn and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Bjorn shot 70 while Jimenez shot a 74 for a second round total of 2-under-par 140. Fourth place was shared by Jose Maria Olazabal and Kirk Triplett with matching 71s for totals of 1-under-par 141. Triplett was in the running for the lead with birdies on his first four of eight holes until double bogeying twice on the back nine. Finishing in sixth place were John Huston, Hal Sutton, and Lee Westwood at even-par 142. Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh completed the top ten at 1-over-par 143. Jack Nicklaus shot 11-over-par 82, for a two round total 13-over-par 155 falling short of the cut. Nicklaus, playing in his 44th consecutive Open, was saluted by fans and players. When Nicklaus reached the 18th hole he attempted to go out big and reach the 545-yard hole in two shots. He had not attempted this in more than 20 years, but he was successful. Todd Fischer had a hole-in-one on the 106-yard seventh hole, the 29th hole-in-one in US Open history. Thursday's fog forced two rounds to be played simultaneously Friday with 75 golfers completing their first round to immediately begin their second. |
