In the third round of the 2000 US Open Championship, Tiger Woods shot an even-par 71 to increase his lead to ten strokes. Woods has a three round total of 8-under-par 205 which gives him the biggest final- round lead in tournament history. This ten stroke lead beats the previous record, set by James Barnes in 1921, of seven strokes. Despite holding the lead, Woods still struggled on third round holes like the rest of the field, an august group composed of the best player's in the world today.
Tiger Woods triple-bogeyed the third hole, bogeyed the 8th, and placed a tee shot into the Pacific Ocean. Somehow, he still managed to shoot par. Ernie Els shot a 3-under 68 for the day but still had a three round total of 2-over-par 215. Els extraordinary effort helped him move from a tie for 30th place to second place. Els 68 gave him the low score of the round and a one-stoke advantage over Padraig Harrington and Migue Angel Jimenez. Harrington shot a third round 72 and Jimenez a 76 for totals of 3-over-par 216. Finishing in fifth place were Phil Mickelson and Jose Maria Olazabal with 4-over-par 217s. Thirteen strokes off the lead were John Huston and Lee Westwood. Huston and Westwood both shot 76s for three round totals of 5-over- par 218. Michael Campbell and Nick Faldo rounded out the top ten with 6-over-par 219s.
After Friday's round the top 60 player's, and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead, made the cut leaving a minuscule field of 63 players. Windy conditions and rock hard greens made Saturday's play tough.
