In the first round of the 2000 British Open Erine Els took the lead after shooting a 6-under-par 66. Els
round consisted of eight birdies the last of which was shot on the legendary Road Hole for his one
stroke lead over Steve Flesch and Tiger Woods. Flesh and Woods Shot 5-under-par 67s for their spots
in second. Woods, who has not shot a bogey in 44 consecutive holes in majors, is trying to become the
fifth player to win all four major championships. Flesch, who was in the lead at one point, hasn't won
and is playing in his first British Open. Finishing in fourth place were Scott Dunlap, Ian Garbutt, Sergio
Garcia, Padraig Harrington, the 1996 winner Tom Lehman, Shigeki Maruyama, and Dennis Paulson at 4-
under-par 68. The defending champion, Paul Lawrie, finished at 6 over par 78 with five others.

In Fridays round Tiger Woods shot a 66 for an 11-under-par 133 total to move into first place. Woods
shot another bogey free round with his last bogey being in the third round at Pebble Beach. David Toms
finished alone in second place three stokes back after shooting a 67 for an 8-under-par 136 total.
Toms, a two time winner on the tour, and has a one stroke lead over Steve Flesch, Sergio Garcia, and
Loren Roberts. Roberts, the winner last week, shot a 68 while Garcia shot a 69 and Flesch a 70 for their
7-under-par 137s. Sixth place went to Thomas Bjorn, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, and Phil
Mickelson with 6-under-par 138s. Mickelson, Davis Love III, and Jose Coceres all shot 66s for the low
rounds on Friday. Paul Lawrie, the defending champion, shot a 75 to finish at 9-over-par 153 with three
others.

In the third round Tiger Woods extended his lead by three strokes with a 67 for a 16-under-par 200.
Woods began his round by three putting to end his bogey free streak at 63 holes but finished with six
birdies. Woods had moved in position to beat Nick Falso's record of an 18-under-par total and possibly
make Jack Nicklaus the second youngest player to win the Grand Slam. Finishing in second place six
strokes back were Thomas Bjorn and David Duval with 10-under-par 206s. Duval shot a 6-foot birdie
putt on the 18th for a third round 66 while Bjorn shot a 68. Darren Clarke, Loren Roberts, and David
Toms finished in fourth place with 9-under-par 207s. Finishing eight strokes off the lead were Ernie Els,
Steve Flesch, Tom Lehman, and Dennis Paulson with 8-under-par 208s. Els, who has finished second in
the first two majors this year, shot a 70 along with Lehman while Paulson shot a 69 and Flesch a 71.

In Sunday's final round Tiger Woods shot a 69 for a 19-under-par 269 total and the win. Woods eight
stroke victory, the largest in the 87 years of the British Open, earned him the title of youngest player to
win the career grand slam and $759,150. Woods also received his sixth victory of the year and the
record of the largest margin of victory in the Open since 1913. Second place went to Thomas Bjorn and
Ernie Els with totals of 11-under-par 277 for $371,984. Els shot a final round 69 for his spot in second
which he has held in three straight majors. Els had also been runner-up to Woods six times, more than
any other player. Fourth place went to Tom Lehman and David Toms finishing with 10-under-par 278s
for $197,379. Lehman shot his third 70 while Toms shot a consecutive 71 to finish one stoke ahead of
Fred Couples. Couples shot a final round 69 for a 9-under-par 279 total earning $197,379. Finishing in
seventh place were Paul Azinger, Darren Clarke, Pierre Fulke, and Loren Roberts with 8-under-par 280s
for $100,587. David Duval, the only player that challenged Woods in the final round, shot a 75 to finish
with a 7-under-par 281 total with eight others. Duval shot a 32 on the first nine and was only three shots
off the lead until Woods birdied three of his next four holes. Duval was now playing for second but after
shooting into the bunker on the 17th and taking four shots to get out he finished with a 75.
