In the first round of the 2001 British Open Colin Montgomerie shot six birdies and an eagle on the sixth
hole for a 6-under-par 65 and the lead. Montgomerie shot his best round in 11 years of the tournament
and capped it off with a forty foot birdie putt on the 18th. Finishing three strokes back in 2nd place were
Chris DiMarco, Brad Faxon and Mikko Ilonen with 3-under 68s. David Duval, Jose Maria Olazabal and
Jesper Parnevik shot 2-under-par 69s for 5th while Sergio Garcia, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson finished
a stroke back with 70s. Tiger Woods, the defending champion, shot a 71 to finish 6 strokes back along
with Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer. Woods started off well with an 18-foot birdie putt and a par on his
second hole before shooting into five bunkers and missing six fairways.

In the second round Colin Montgomerie held onto his spot in the lead by one stroke after shooting a 1-
under-par 70. Montgomerie made only two mistakes in his round with a bogey on the third after hitting
into the trees and a tee shot that landed in a bunker on the 15th for his 7-under-par 135 total. Pierre
Fulke took second place with a bogey free 67 for a 6-under-par 136 total. Third place was shared by Joe
Ogilvie, Greg Owen and Jesper Parnevik each with 68s for 5-under 137s while Alex Cejka, Niclas Fasth
and Eduardo Romero finished one stroke back with 138s. The defending champion, Tiger Woods, shot a
second round 68 for a 3-under 139 with Billy Andrade, Darren Clarke and Brad Faxon. Woods had birdies
on all of the par-5s this round, along with a bogey on the 15th hole, for his 68.

In Saturday's third round Alex Cejka, David Duval, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam all shared the
lead with 6-under-par 207s. Cejka lead by two stokes before shooting three bogeys over his last four
holes while Duval shot a 65 and Langer and Woosnam 67s. Colin Montgomerie shot a 73 to finish one
stroke back with Darren Clarke, Pierre Fulke, Joe Ogilvie Greg Owen, Jesper Parnevik and Nick Price with
208s. Finishing with 209s were Billy Andrade, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen. Tiger Woods
shot a third round 73 for a 1-under-par 212 five strokes off the lead.

In the final round on Sunday David Duval became the 6th American to win the championship in the past
seven years by shooting a 67 for a 10-under-par 274 total. Duval shot five birdies in his final round for
a three stroke victory and $858,300. Finishing in second place was Niclas Fasth with 7-under-par 277
total for $514,980. Third place was shared by Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard
Langer, Billy Mayfair and Ian Woosnam with 6-under-par 278s while Sergio Garcia, Mikko Ilonen, Jesper
Parnevik and Kevin Sutherland finished on stroke back with 279s. Tiger Woods shot a final round 71 for
a 1-under-par 283 nine strokes off the lead with three others.
