| The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is a five day tournament played on four Palm Springs area courses: the par 71 Bermuda Dunes Country Club is the host course while play extends to the Indian Wells Country Club, the La Quinta Country Club and PGA West, which all play as par 72s. Entrants play each course before the final cut is made at the end of Saturday's round. Wednesday found David Toms out to an early lead as he carded a pair of eagles to end the day with a 9-under 63, one stroke in front of Robert Damron, Bob Tway and Paul Goydos. Five players, Greg Kraft, Olin Browne, JL Lewis, Esteban Toledo and Neal Lancaster all finished with 7-under 65s to remain within two-strokes of the lead. Toms followed his first round 63 with a respectable 68 but lost the lead to Greg Kraft who turned in his second 65 in two days, the result of a solid round that included a string of birdies from the 5th through the 8th holes and additional birdies at the 11th, 15th and 17th. Friday found PGA Tour newcomer Rich Beem one-stroke in front of Matt Gogel, who was playing in just his second tour event. Kraft, a 14-year PGA Tour veteran who is yet to win a tour event, turned in a 69 at Bermuda Dunes to lose the lead and drop to 7th place behind Peter Jacobsen and Craig Barlow. Saturday, the day of the final cut, ended with second-year pro Rory Sabbatini of South Africa leading Matt Gogel by a stroke after turning in an 8-under round at Indian Wells Country Club. Sabbatini faced a group at two behind that included David Duval- who won last year's Hope Classic with a final round 59, the only final round 59 in the history of the PGA Tour- Jesper Parnevik of Sweden, third-round leader Rich Beem and Stephen Ames. The final round on Sunday was decided by a single stroke as Jesper Parnevik birdied the 18th hole and Rory Sabbatini's poor tee shot eliminated any hope except to save par. David Toms, the first round's leader, was still around on Sunday and ended in a tie for 3rd with J.L. Lewis at 25-under for 333. |
