| The opening round on Thursday found Notah Begay III, David Duval and Vijay Singh tied for a share of the lead at 6-under 66s. The was suspended due to high winds and hard rains. Tiger Woods, who broke the head off of his driver at the 16th tee, was two shots behind. Friday found Fijian Vijay Singh atop the leaderboard with Navajo Notah Begay III a stroke behind. Tiger Woods finished the round seven shots behind after turning in a 1-over 73. Saturday found PGA Tour rookie Matt Gogel and Mark Brooks atop the leaderboard with Vijay Singh a stroke behind. Tiger Woods was tied with four others at 7-under, five strokes off the lead. The final round found Tiger Woods on the move, with an incredible 8-under 64 to overcome a 5-stroke deficit and best rookie Matt Gogel. Woods became, at the tender age of 24, the third golfer in history to win six consecutive PGA Tour events, going the illustrious company of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. The next milestone mark for Tiger would be to beat Nelson's 1945 record-winning streak of 11 straight wins. *The 1999 event was shortened because of bad weather to three rounds. Payne Stewart, the leader at the time the event was cancelled was declared the winner. He died later in the season in a plane crash. |
