The second largest national forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest has
more than 580,000 acres of riparian habitat (biotic communities occurring along banks of continually moist streams, rivers and lakes) in which the operation of motorized vehicles is strictly prohibited. The diversity of these elevations support an abundance of wildlife. Within these regions, modern-day explorers can experience the virgin forest in all of its grandeur, and in solitude.

Detailed maps of the Tonto National Forest are available at the ranger station on State Route 260 in Payson.
