| In the opening round of the 2002 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Ed Dougherty shot a 6-under-par 66 for the lead. Dougherty closed with a birdie putt of 20 feet on the 17th hole and another birdie putt of 25 feet on the 18th for his one stroke lead. Finishing in second place was Hale Irwin, who could have shared the lead but shot a bogey on the 17th hole, with a 5-under-par 67. Third place was shared by Jim Dent, Allen Doyle, Vicente Fernandez, Bob Gilder, Wayne Levi and Tom Wargo with 4-under-par 68s. Finishing in ninth place three strokes off the lead were Stewart Ginn, Hubert Green, Walter Hall, Gary McCord, Jay Sigel and Doug Tewell with 3-under-par 69s. The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf was being played as an official Senior PGA Tour event for the first time. The tournament had been changed from a team event to an individual play format. In the second round on Saturday Doug Tewell shot an eagle on his first hole for a 66 and a 9-under-par 135 total. Tewell shot only one bogey in his round and finished with a one stroke lead over Stewart Ginn. Stewart Ginn took second place with a birdie on the 18th hole for a 67 and an 8-under 136 total. Third place was shared by Hale Irwin and Tom Jenkins with 7-under-par 137s while Bob Gilder, Wayne Levi and Sammy Rachels finished 1 stroke back in fifth. Ed Dougherty, Vicente Fernandez, Fuzzy Zoeller and Gary McCord shared eighth place with 5-under-par 139s four strokes off the lead. In the final round Doug Tewell shot three birdies for an 11-under-par 205 total and the win. Tewell shot a final round 70 to earn his sixth career Senior Tour victory and $306,000. Bobby Wadkins took second place with a birdie on the 18th for a final round 66 and a 10-under-par 206 total. Third place was shared by Bob Gilder and Stewart Ginn with 8-under-par 208s. Gary McCord took fifth place with a consecutive 70 for a 7-under-par 209 total while Hale Irwin, Tom Jenkins and Larry Nelson finished one stroke back in sixth place. Finishing in ninth place six strokes off the lead were Hugh Baiocchi, Vicente Fernandez and Hubert Green with 5-under-par 211s. |
