In the first round of the 2001 Countrywide Tradition Doug Tewell took the lead by shooting a 6-under-
par 66. Tewell birdied three of his last four par-5s for a one stroke lead over Mike McCullough and Tom
Wargo. McCullough was tied for the lead with a five birdie stretch on the back nine but dropped back to
second by bogeying the 17th. Finishing in fourth place were Terry Dill, Bob Gilder and Jim Holtgrieve with
4-under-par 68s. Jim Ahern, Jose Maria Canizares, John Jacobs, Gil Morgan and Jim Thorpe all shared
seventh place with 3-under-par 69s.

In the second round Doug Tewell increased his lead to three strokes by shooting a 67 for an 11-under-
par 133 total. Tewell shot a bogey free round that included five birdies. Mike McCullough, Larry Nelson
and Tom Wargo shared third place with 8-under-par 136s. Nelson shot a second round 64 for his spot
that consisted of nine birdies and a bogey, while McCullough and Wargo shot 69s. Allen Doyle took fifth
place with a 66 for a 7-under-par 137 total while Bruce Fleisher, Hale Irwin and Gil Morgan shared sixth
place one stroke back with 138s. Ninth place was shared by John Bland and Hubert Green with 5-under-
par 139s. Tom Kite, the defending champion, shot a consecutive 72 for an even-par 144 with three
others eleven strokes off the lead.

During the third round Doug Tewell held onto his lead by two strokes despite shooting three bogeys for
a 70. Second place was shared by Mike McCullough and Larry Nelson both shot third round 69s for 11-
under-par 205 totals. McCullough shot an eagle, four birdies and four bogeys for his 69 while Nelson
birdied two of his last four holes. Tom Wargo carded a 71 for a 9-under-par 207 total and fourth place.
Finishing in fifth place was Hale Irwin with a third round 70 for a 208 while Jim Ahern finished one stroke
back in sixth place with a 209. John Bland, Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher, John Jacobs, J.C. Snead and
Howard Twitty shared seventh place with 6-under-par 210s.

In the final round Doug Tewell shot a 62 for a 23-under-par 265 total and the wire-to-wire win. Tewell's
10-under-par 62 set a new tournament record, gave him a nine stroke win, and made him the second
player in the event to go wire-to-wire in 13 years. Tewell, the 2000 Senior Rookie of the Year, earned
$225,000 for his win to move from the 28th position on the money list to the 8th. Mike McCullough
finished in 2nd place by shooting his 3rd consecutive 69 for a 14-under 274 total and $149,600. Hale
Irwin took third place with a 275 while Gil Morgan finished in fourth with a 277. Fifth place was shared by
J.C. Snead and Larry Nelson with 8-under 280s. John Bland, Bruce Fleisher and Howard Twitty shared
seventh place with 7-under-par 281s for $54,400 apiece. Tenth place was shared by Allen Doyle and
Hubert Green with 6-under-par 282s for $42,500 each.
