In the opening round of the 2002 Countrywide Tradition Allen Doyle shot a 6-under-par 66 for the lead.
Doyle gave up his lead with a bogey on the 17th hole but regained it with a birdie on the 18th for a one
stroke lead. Finishing in second place were Tom Kite, Dick Mast, Don Pooley, Rocky Thompson and Jim
Thorpe with 5-under-par 67s. Jose Maria Canizares, Bruce Fleisher, John Jacobs and Fuzzy Zoeller took
seventh place with 4-under-par 68s two strokes off the lead. Doug Tewell, the defending champion, shot
an opening round 1-under-par 71 to finish five strokes off the lead with nine others.

In Friday's second round Bob Eastwood shot a 66, Bob Gilder a 68 and Jim Thorpe a 70 to all share the
lead with 7-under-par 137s. Eastwood shot birdies on five of his last six holes for his spot in the lead
while Gilder sunk a 25-foot birdie on the 12th and a 18 foot birdie on the 13th. Finishing in fourth place
one stroke back was Fuzzy Zoeller with a 70 for a 6-under-par 138 total. Tom Kite took fifth place with a
139 while Allen Doyle, John Jacobs, Tom Jenkins, Bruce Summerhays, Rocky Thompson, Dick Mast and
Don Pooley shared fifth place one stroke back with 140s.

In the third round John Jacobs took the lead by shooting a 66 for a 10-under-par 206 total. Jacobs shot
a total of six birdies, three over his first nine and three on his second, in his bogey free round. Finishing
in second place was Jim Thorpe, a second round co-leader, with a consecutive 70 for a 9-under-par 207
total. Thorpe shot three birdies, three bogeys and an eagle on the 18th for his 70. Bob Gilder took third
place with a 208 total while Bruce Summerhays finished two strokes back in fourth. Fifth place was shared
by Tom Kite, Hale Irwin, Dick Mast and Fuzzy Zoeller with 5-under-par 211s while Tom Purtzer and Tom
Watson finished one stroke back in ninth.

In the final round Jim Thorpe shot a 70 and John Jacobs a 71 for 11-under-par 277s forcing the playoff.
Thorpe shot a birdie on the first playoff hole, the 18th, to win his first major title and earn $300,000.
Jacobs settled for second after shooting into the gallery on the playoff hole then missing a short putt
by liping out. Finishing in third place were Bob Gilder and Bruce Summerhays with 10-under-par 278s.
Gilder shot a final round 70 for his spot and Summerhays, who missed his 5 foot birdie putt on the 18th
that would have tied him for the lead, shot a 68. Tom Watson took fifth place with a 68 for a 280 while
Hale Irwin finished one stroke back in sixth. Seventh place was shared by Tom Kite and Tom Purtzer with
282s and Bruce Fleisher, John Mahaffey, Dick Mast and Don Pooley shared ninth with 283s. Last year's
winner, Doug Tewell, shot a final round 72 for a 1-under-par 287 ten strokes off the lead.
