In the first round of the 2001 Bell South Senior Classic Allen Doyle and Sammy Rachels shot 6-under-
par 66s to share the lead. Doyle shot seven birdies and a bogey for his spot in the lead while Rachels
matched his best round of the year with two bogeys and eight birdies. Finishing in third place were Joe
Inman, Tom Kite, Terry Mauney, Howard Twitty and Tom Wargo with 5-under-par 67s. Eighth place was
shared by Jim Ahern, Jose Maria Canizares, Andy North and Dana Quigley with 4-under-par 68s. Hale
Irwin, the defending champion, birdied his first three holes for a 3-under-par 69 three stokes off the
lead with six others.

In the second round Sammy Rachels shot a 70 to hold onto his spot in the lead with an 8-under-par
136 while Leonard Thompson shot a 66 and Tom Wargo a 69 to join him. Wargo held the lead through
12 holes but bogeyed two of his last six holes to drop back. Fourth place was shared by Allen Doyle,
Mike North, Hale Irwin, Terry Mauney, Andy North, Dana Quigley and Howard Twitty with 7-under 137s.

In the final round on Sunday Sammy Rachels shot a 63 for a 17-under 199 total and the win. Rachels
shot a bogey free round of five birdies and two eagles for the best round of his career. Rachels earned
$240,000, the biggest check of his career, by four strokes over Hale Irwin. Irwin shot a final round 66
for a 13-under-par 203 total and $140,800. Bruce Fleisher and Tom Kite shared third with 204s while
Allen Doyle and Gil Morgan finished a stroke back in 5th place. Finishing in 7th place eight strokes off
the lead were Dana Quigley and Leonard Thompson with 9-under 207s for $54,400 apiece. Jim Ahern,
Jose Maria Canizares, Mike Hill, Terry Mauney and Howard Twitty shared 9th place at 7-under-par 209.
