In the first round of the 2002 MasterCard Championship Tom Kite took the lead by shooting a 9-under-
par 63. Kite shot a bogey free round of five birdies and two eagles for a 3 stroke lead over Larry Nelson.
Nelson, the defending champion, shot an opening round 6-under-par 66 for 2nd place. Third place was
shared by Jim Colbert, Bob Gilder and Doug Tewell with 5-under 67s. Tewell shot a hole-in-one on the
208 yard eighth hole, the tournaments first, using his 4 iron. Dave Eichelberger, Bruce Fleisher, Walter
Hall, Bruce Lietzke and Bobby Wadkins shared sixth place with 4-under-par 68s.

In Saturday's second round Tom Kite held onto his spot in the lead by shooting a 69 for a 12-under-par
132 total. Kite shot five birdies over his first seven holes and two bogeys on his back nine for a 5 stroke
lead over Bob Gilder, Walter Hall and John Jacobs. Gilder shot a second round 70, Hall a 69 and Jacobs
a 67 for 7-under-par 137s. Fifth place was shared by brothers Bobby and Lanny Wadkins with 6-under-
par 138s. Jim Colbert, Bruce Fleisher, Larry Nelson, Dana Quigley and Jim Thorpe shared seventh place
with 5-under-par 139s.

In the final round on Sunday Tom Kite went wire-to-wire by shooting a 67 for a 17-under-par 199 total.
Kite birdied seven of his final fourteen holes for a six stroke win over John Jacobs. Jacobs shot a final
round 68, that included a double-eagle on the 10th hole, for an 11-under-par 205 total and 2nd place.
Finishing in third place was Bobby Wadkins with a 10-under-par 206 for $126,000. Wadkins began the
round in fifth place six strokes off the lead with his brother Lanny but his final round 68 moved him into
third while Lanny shot a 72 to fall to ninth. Dana Quigley took fourth place with a final round 69 for an
8-under 208 total. Fifth place was shared by Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher, Walter Hall and Larry Nelson
with 7-under-par 209s for $65,750 each. Finishing in ninth place eleven strokes off the lead were Mike
McCullough, Doug Tewell and Lanny Wadkins with 6-under-par 210s.
