| In the first round of the 2001 Ford Senior Players Championship Ed Dougherty, Allen Doyle, Ray Floyd, Larry Nelson and Tom Watson all shot 5-under-par 67s to share the lead. Watson, who had not used a driver or an iron for practice in over 2 months, shot five birdie putts of twelve feet or further while Nelson shot 4 birdie putts. Jay Sigel took sixth place with a 4-under-par 68 and Isao Aoki, Dave Eichelberger, Bruce Fleisher, Mike McCullough and J.C. Snead all finished one stroke back in seventh place with 69s. In the second round Tom Watson held onto his spot in the lead with a 68 while Hale Irwin shot a 65 to join him. Irwin shot a bogey free round of seven birdies, with five coming over his back 9, to tie Watson at 9-under-par 135. Finishing in 2nd place was Allen Doyle with a second round 69 for an 8-under-par 136 total. Ed Dougherty and Larry Nelson both shot second round 70s for 7-under-par 137s and fourth place. Sixth place was shared by Isao Aoki, Hugh Baiocchi, Bruce Fleisher and Jay Sigel with 6-under-par 138s. Tom Kite finished alone in tenth place after a second round 68 for a 5-under 139. In Saturday's third round Ed Dougherty took the lead by shooting a 68 for an 11-under-par 205 total. Dougherty's 68 moved him from fourth to first place and gave him a one stroke lead over Allen Doyle. Doyle shot a third round 70 for a 10-under-par 206 total and second place. Finishing in third were Doug Tewell and Tom Watson with 9-under-par 207s. Watson shot an eagle and three birdies over his final ten holes for a 72 and Tewell shot a 67. Jay Sigel took fifth place with a 208 while Ray Floyd and Gil Morgan shared sixth one stroke back. Finishing in eighth place were Bruce Fleisher, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and Mike McCullough with 6-under-par 210s. Irwin, the second round co-leader, lost five stokes over his first six holes for a 75. In the final round Allen Doyle shot a 67 and Doug Tewell a 66 for 15-under-par 273s forcing the playoff. Doyle shot par on the first hole of the sudden death playoff to earn his 2nd major and sixth overall title on the Senior Tour. Doyle shot seven birdies in his final round with his final birdie, a 35-foot putt on the 18th, forcing the playoff. Finishing in third place was Hale Irwin with a final round 66 for a 12-under-par 276 total and $180,000. Ed Dougherty and Bruce Fleisher shared fourth place with 278s while Ray Floyd and Mike McCullough finished 1 stroke back in sixth place. Eighth place was shared by Jay Sigel and Tom Watson with 8-under-par 280s for $75,000 apiece. Jim Albus, Tom Kite and Bobby Walzel took 10th with 6-under-par 282s nine strokes off the lead. |
