| In the first round of the 2001 Ace Group Classic Jose Maria Canizares shot a 4-under-par 68 for the lead. Canizares sunk a 25-foot eagle putt on the 16th and played his last four holes in 4 under for a one stroke lead over Mike McCullough and Dana Quigley. McCullough and Quigley both shot opening rounds of 3-under-par 69 to share second place. Finishing in fourth place were Jim Ahern, Hugh Baiocchi, John Bland and Bruce Summerhays with 2-under 70s. Finishing in the tie for 8th place three strokes off the lead were Isao Aoki, Terry Dill, Stewart Ginn, Hubert Green, Graham Marsh, Terry Mauney, Gil Morgan, and DeWitt Weaver with 1-under-par 71s. Larry Nelson, who won the first two Senior Tour events this year, shot an even-par 72 with six others. In the second round Gil Morgan moved into the lead with a 67 for a 6-under-par 138 total. Morgan shot six birdies, three on his first nine and three on his second, and bogeyed the 18th after hitting into the water on his approach shot. Finishing in second place were John Bland, Mike McCullough, and Dana Quigley with 5-under-par 139s. Jim Ahern took fifth place with a consecutive 70 for a 4-under-par 140 total. Finishing in sixth place was a group of six that included George Archer, Jose Maria Canizares, Allen Doyle, Bob Gilder, Larry Nelson, Bruce Summerhays, Doug Tewell, Steve Veriato and Bobby Walzel with 3-under-par 141s. In the final round Gil Morgan shot a 66 for a 12-under-par 204 total and the win. Morgan shot a bogey free round that earned him $210,000 with a two stroke victory over Dana Quigley. Quigley shot a final round 67 for a 10-under-par 206 total and $123,200. Stewart Ginn shot a final round 66 for a 209 total and third place five strokes off the lead. Fourth place went to Tom Kite with a 6-under-par 210 total while Jose Maria Canizares, Allen Doyle and Dave Stockton shared fifth place with 211s. Finishing eight strokes off the lead in eighth place were Vicente Fernandez, Bruce Fleisher, Larry Nelson, Gary Player, and Bobby Walzel with 4-under-par 212s for $36,960. Lanny Wadkins, the defending champion, finished in the tie for forty-third place after shooting a final round 70 for a 219. |
