| The first round of the 2002 Ace Group Classic Tom Watson shot an 8-under-par 64 for the lead. Watson shot birdies on the 10th, 11th and 14th holes to get to 5-under then followed with a hole-in-one on the 163 yard, par-3 16th hole. Finishing in second place one stroke back was Dana Quigley with a 7-under- par 65. Jim Thorpe took third place with a 6-under-par 66 while Allen Doyle and Hale Irwin shared fourth place one stroke back. Finishing in sixth place were Tom Jenkins, Dick Mast, Don Pooley and Sammy Rachels with 4-under-par 68s. Tenth place was shared by John Bland, Jim Dent, Stewart Ginn, Jay Sigel, Gil Morgan, Jay Overton and Mike Smith with 3-under-par 69s. In Saturday's second round Tom Watson expanded his lead to two strokes after shooting a 66 for a 14- under-par 130 total. Watson shot two birdies over his front nine followed by birdies on the 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th holes to beat the old 36-hole tournament record by one stroke. Finishing in second place was Hale Irwin with a second round 64 for a 12-under-par 132 total. Irwin shot eight birdies in his round and could have been a stroke closer but was penalized after dropping his ball on his marker on the 5th green. Dana Quigley took third place with a 68 for an 11-under-par 133 total. Fourth place was shared by Allen Doyle and Jim Thorpe with 10-under-par 134s while Roger Davis and Mike Hill shared sixth one stroke back. Eighth place was shared by Jim Dent, Tom Jenkins, Gil Morgan and Sammy Rachels with 8- under-par 136s six strokes off the lead. In the final round on Sunday Hale Irwin earned his thirty-third career victory by shooting seven birdies for a 68. Irwin finished with a 16-under-par 200 total for $225,000 and a one stroke victory over Tom Watson. Watson, who lead in the first two rounds, carded a final round 71 after shooting into the water on the 17th hole for a bogey. Jim Dent and Jim Thorpe shared third place with 14-under-par 202s for $99,000 apiece. Finishing in fifth place were Allen Doyle, Dana Quigley and Sammy Rachels with 13- under-par 203s. Mike Hill took eighth place with a 205 and Tom Jenkins and Jay Overton shared ninth place one stroke back. The defending champion, Gil Morgan, finished in eleventh place after a final round 71 for a 9-under-par 207 total. |
