| In the first round of the 2001 Verizon Classic Jack Nicklaus and Doug Tewell shot 4-under-par 67s to share the lead. Tewell shot two bogeys on the front nine but came back with four birdies over his final seven holes for his spot in first while Nicklaus shot a bogey free round. Ray Floyd finished in third place with a 3-under-par 68 that included a four birdie streak over five holes. Finishing in fourth place were Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher, the defending champion, and Jim Holtgrieve with 2-under-par 69s. A group of twelve finished in 7th place that included Jose Maria Canizares, Dale Douglass, Vicente Fernandez, Bob Gilder, Mike Hill, Hale Irwin, Terry Mauney, Mike McCullough, Walter Morgan, Steve Stull, Leonard Thompson and Bobby Walzel with 1-under-par 70s. In the second round Hale Irwin moved into the lead by shooting a 66 for a 6-under-par 136 total. Irwin shot four birdies on the back nine that included a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a two stroke lead. Finishing in second place were Jose Maria Canizares, Bruce Fleisher, Bob Gilder, Gil Morgan, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Walzel with 4-under 138s. Morgan shot a 67 for his spot in second, Gilder, Canizares and Walzel shot 68s, Fleisher a 69 and Nicklaus a 71. Finishing in 8th place were Hugh Baiocchi, Doug Johnson, Mike McCullough, Leonard Thompson, Doug Tewell and Dana Quigley finishing three strokes off the lead with 3-under-par 139s. In the final round Bob Gilder shot a 67 for an 8-under-par 205 total and the win. Gilder earned his first Senior PGA Tour title and $210,000, his largest previous check was $72,000, by three strokes. Finishing in the tie for second place were Bruce Fleisher, Ray Floyd, Gil Morgan and Bobby Walzel with 5-under-par 208s for $93,800 apiece. Sixth place was shared by Allen Doyle, Larry Nelson and Christy O'Connor with 4-under-par 209s finishing four strokes off the lead. Jose Maria Canizares, Hale Irwin, Tom Jenkins, Dana Quigley and Leonard Thompson finished in ninth place with 3-under-par 210s for $33,600 apiece. |
