| In the first round of the 2001 Mexico Senior Classic Ed Dougherty and Bob Eastwood shot 7-under-par 65s to share the lead. Dougherty shot a bogey, six birdies and an eagle for his best round since 1998 while Eastwood shot a bogey free round of seven birdies. Bobby Walzel took third place with a 6-under- par 66 while Hugh Baiocchi, Walter Hall, Dick Lotz and Mike McCullough shared fourth with 4-under-par 68s. Finishing four strokes off the lead in eighth place were Tony Peterson and Steve Veriato with 69s. The defending champion, Hubert Green, shot an 8-over-par 80 to finish fifteen strokes off the lead. In the second round Jim Colbert, Bob Eastwood and Mike McCullough all shared the lead with 8-under- par 136s. Colbert shot a 10-under-par 62 to match the course record and put himself in position for his fist Senior PGA Tour win. McCullough shot a consecutive 68 and Eastwood a 71 for their spots. Walter Hall took fourth place by shooting a 69 for a 7-under-par 137. Finishing in 5th place were Ed Dougherty, Dick Lotz and Bobby Walzel with 6-under-par 138s. Finishing three strokes off the lead in eighth place was Tom Jenkins with a second round 67 for a 5-under-par 139 total. Jose Maria Canizares and Bruce Summerhays shared ninth place with 4-under-par 140s. In the final round Mike McCullough shot his third consecutive 68 for a 12-under-par 204 total and the win. McCullough won his first Senior PGA Tour title and earned $225,000 by one stroke. Finishing in second place were Jim Colbert and Bob Eastwood with 11-under-par 205s for $120,000. Hugh Baiocchi and Bobby Walzel finished in fourth place with 206s. Baiocchi shot a final round 64 and Walzel a 68 earning them $81,000 apiece. Jim Albus and Jose Maria Canizares shot 8-under-par 208s for $57,000 apiece. Ed Brooks shot a final round 68 for a 209 and eighth place while Ed Dougherty finished one stroke back with a 210. Jerry Bruner, George Burns, Stewart Ginn and Bruce Summerhays finished in the tie for tenth place with 211s for $34,500 apiece. |
