In the opening round of the 2002 SBC Senior Classic Tom Purtzer shot a 2-under-par 70 for the lead.
Purtzer, who was playing in his fourth Senior Tour event, shot a bogey and three birdies in his round for
a one stroke lead over Gil Morgan. Morgan shot three birdies in his round with two coming over his final
2 holes. Third place was shared by Walter Hall, Gary McCord, Howard Twitty and Tom Watson with even-
par 72s. Finishing in seventh place 3 strokes off the lead were Bruce Fleisher, J.C. Snead, Jim Thorpe,
Gibby Gilbert, Doug Johnson, Larry Nelson and Christy O'Connor with 1-over-par 73s.

In Saturday's second round Tom Watson took the lead by shooting a 69 for a 3-under-par 141 total.
Watson shot five birdies over his round for a two stroke lead over Gil Morgan, Doug Johnson and Tom
Kite. Kite shot five birdies and two bogeys in his round for a 69 while Johnson shot a 70 and Morgan a
72. Tom Purtzer, the first round leader, took fifth place three stokes off the lead with a 74 for an even-
par 144 total. Sixth place was shared by Dave Eichelberger and Gibby Gilbert with 1-over-par 145s while
George Archer, Larry Nelson, Sammy Rachels and Doug Tewell shared eighth place one stroke back.

In the final round on Sunday Tom Watson held onto his spot in the lead with a 71 while Tom Kite shot a
69 to join him and force the playoff. Kite and Watson both shot par on the first playoff hole but on the
second hole Watson missed his 6-foot par putt and Kite tapped his in for the win. Kite earned his 2nd
title this year, his fifth on the Senior PGA Tour and $217,500 for the win. Finishing in third place were Gil
Morgan and Tom Purtzer with 3-under-par 213s. Purtzer, the first round leader, shot a final round 69 for
his spot in third while Morgan shot a 70. Bob Gilder took fifth place with a final round 70 for a 1-over-par
217 while George Archer and Gary McCord shared sixth place one stroke back. Finishing in eighth place 7
strokes off the lead were Allen Doyle, Dave Eichelberger, Gibby Gilbert, Doug Johnson and Doug Tewell
with 3-over-par 219s. The defending champion, Jim Colbert, finished fourteen strokes off the lead in
46th place after rounds of 77, 73 and 76.
