In the first round of the 2001 SBC Senior Classic Jose Maria Canizares, last week's winner, and Bob
Charles shot 7-under-par 65s to share the lead. Finishing one stroke back in third place was Jim Thorpe
with a 6-under-par 66. Finishing in fourth place were Jim Colbert, Ed Dougherty, Bob Eastwood, Bruce
Fleisher and Hale Irwin with 5-under-par 67s. Ninth place was shared by Jim Ahern, Fred Gibson, Jim
Holtgrieve, Gil Morgan and Dana Quigley with 4-under-par 68s three strokes off the lead.

In the second round Jim Colbert shot a consecutive 67 and Larry Nelson a 64, tying the course record,
for 10-under-par 134s and the lead. Nelson shot eight birdies in a bogey free round while Colbert shot
an eagle on the 17th hole. Finishing in third place were Jim Ahern and Jose Maria Canizares with 9-
under-par 135s. Graham Marsh took fifth place with a 67 for an 8-under-par 136 while Bob Eastwood
and Garry McCord shared sixth with 138s. Finishing in eight place five strokes off the lead were Hugh
Baiocchi, Don Bies, Bob Charles, Ed Dougherty, Stewart Ginn, Hale Irwin and Lanny Wadkins with 5-
under-par 139s.

In the final round Jim Colbert shot a 70 for a 12-under-par 204 and the win. Colbert earned his first
title since 1998 and $210,000 by two strokes. Finishing in second place was Jose Maria Canizares with a
consecutive 70 for an 11-under-par 205 and $123,200. Canizares tied Colbert by birdying the 13th but
then pared his next five holes to settle for second place. Finishing in third place were Ed Dougherty,
Gary McCord and Larry Nelson with 10-under-par 206s for $84,000 apiece. Bob Eastwood, Tom Kite and
Walter Morgan shared sixth place at 208 while Jim Ahern, Bob Gilder, Stewart Ginn and John Mahaffey
finished on stroke back in ninth with 209s.
