| In the opening round of the 2002 Toshiba Senior Classic Allen Doyle shot a 5-under-par 66 for a one stroke lead. Doyle shot six birdies and a bogey on the 18th for his lead over Jim Dent and Hale Irwin. Fourth place was shared by George Archer, Bob Gilder, Walter Hall, Mike McCullough, Gil Morgan, Dave Stockton, Bobby Wadkins and Tom Watson with 3-under-par 68s. The defending champion, Jose Maria Canizares, shot a 6-over-par 77 to finish eleven strokes off the lead. In Saturday's second round Hale Irwin took a three stroke lead by shooting a 64 for an 11-under-par 131 total. Irwin shot eight birdies and a bogey in his round that included an incredible par save on the seventh hole. Second place was shared by Allen Doyle, Gil Morgan and Larry Nelson with 8-under-par 134s. Doyle shot a 68 for his spot in second while Morgan shot a 66 and Nelson a 64. Finishing in fifth place were Walter Hall, Don Pooley and Michael Zinni with 7-under 135s while Stewart Ginn and Dave Stockton finished 1 stroke back in eighth place. Tenth place was shared by Bob Eastwood, John Jacobs, Bobby Wadkins, Tom Jenkins and Dana Quigley with 5-under-par 137s. In the final round Hale Irwin earned his 34th title by shooting a 65 for a 17-under-par 196 total. Irwin moved away from the pack with birdies on the 6th, 7th and 8th holes followed by three more birdies on the 15th, 16th and 18th holes for a five stroke win over Allen Doyle. Doyle shot a final round 67 for a 12-under-par 201 total and $132,000. Third place was shared by Dave Stockton and Michael Zinni with 11-under-par 202s. Dana Quigley took fifth place with a 66 for a 203 total while Bobby Wadkins finished one stroke back in sixth. Seventh place was shared by Morris Hatalsky, John Jacobs and Gil Morgan with 8-under 205s for $48,000 apiece. Finishing in tenth place were Walter Hall, Tom Jenkins, Wayne Levi, Don Pooley and Tom Watson with 7-under-par 206s. |
