| At the end of the first round of the MasterCard Championship defending champion John Jacobs held a two-stroke lead over Allen Doyle, Larry Nelson and the 1995 winner Jim Colbert. Jacobs, suffering from a hip injury, shot an 8-under-par 64 to match his tournament record for lowest first round score. On Saturday, despite gusty conditions with winds up to 25 mph, Graham Marsh, a six-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour, shot the low round of the day with a 5-under-par 67. Marsh's two-stroke lead over Dana Quigley, Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino moved him into the lead. John Jacobs, the first round leader, came in at 6-under-par while George Archer shot a 71 and Jim Colbert a 72 to tie for fifth. In each of the first two rounds Quigley, Irwin and Marsh were the only players to shoot in the 60s. In the beginning of the final round George Archer was three-strokes behind Graham Marsh. Archer took the lead on the seventh hole with an even par-5 and went on to win his 19th Senior PGA Tour event with a 9-under-par 207. Lee Trevino, Graham Marsh, Hale Irwin and Dana Quigley all tied for second with their 7-under 209s. John Jacobs, the first round leader, tied Hubert Green for sixth at 211. This year's MasterCard Championship was restructured to include champions from the last two years and winners of major titles from the last five years. Previously, the tournament only included the winners from the previous year's Tour events. |
