In the first round of the BellSouth Senior Classic Gary Player and Leonard Thompson both shot 8-under-
par 64s to share the lead. Player, who was bitten on the arm by a tick three weeks ago, is battling Lyme
disease and was forced to ride in a cart for much of his round. Player's 64 equaled his age, it is a fairly
common occurrence for players to shoot their age. In 1999 five golfers on the Senior Tour shot their age.
Finishing one stroke back were John D Morgan and Vicente Fernandez at 7-under-par 65. Fifth place went
to Dana Quigley and Jose Maria Canizares with 6-under-par 66s. Finishing at four strokes back with six
others was the defending champion, Bruce Fleisher, with a 4-under-par 68.

In the second round Tom Kite, Hale Irwin, Gary Player and Vicente Fernandez all tied for first place with
two round totals of 11-under-par 133. Irwin, who was 55 today, was wished a "happy birthday" by fans on
the first tee this morning. Kite shot a 63 for the lowest round of the day that included seven birdies and
an eagle. Finishing at one stroke off the lead were Tom Jenkins, Leonard Thompson and John D. Morgan
with 10-under-par 134s. Thompson shot five birdies and three bogeys to fall to his spot in fifth place. Two
strokes off the lead were Jim Dent, Jose Maria Canizares and Walter Hall, at 9-under-par 135 for eighth
place. Bruce Fleisher, the defending champion, matched his first round 68 for a 136 total at 8-under with
six others.

In the final round Hale Irwin shot a 7-under-par 65 for a one stroke victory. Irwin had a total of 18-under-
par 198 for $225,000 and his second victory of the year. Irwin shot seven birdies and tied the tournament
record set by Isao Aoki with his 18-under-par 198 total. He also has a combined PGA Tour and Senior PGA
Tour winnings of $16.5 million, more than any other player on any of the tours. Second place went to Gil
Morgan with a final round 63 for a total of 17-under-par 199 for $132,000. Morgan could have shared the
lead but missed putts on his last three holes. Third place went to Tom Jenkins with a 16-under-par 200
total and a one stroke lead over Stewart Ginn. Ginn shot a third round 65 for a 15-under-par 201 total for
fourth place and $90,000.
