In the first round of the 2001 MasterCard Championship Fred Gibson shot an 8-under-par 64 for the
lead. Gibson matched the course record with birdies on the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 16th and
17th. Finishing in second place were Bruce Fleisher and Leonard Thompson with 6-under-par 66s. Fourth
place was shared by Dave Eichelberger, Larry Nelson and Jim Thorpe with 5-under-par 67s. Nelson shot
seven birdies and two bogeys for his spot in fourth. Finishing four strokes off the lead in seventh place
were Ed Dougherty, Tom Kite, Gary McCord and Tom Watson with 68s. The Mastercard Campionship was
limited to golfers who had a Senior Tour event win in the past two years or had won a major title in the
past five years.

In the second round Larry Nelson carded a 64 for a 13-under-par 131 total and the lead. Nelson shot a
bogey-free round that consisted of six birdies and an eagle to tie the 36-hole tournament record of
131. Bruce Fleisher shot his second straight 66 for a 12-under-par 132 total and second place. Fleisher
shot three consecutive birdies from the 13th-15th to take the lead but lost it to Nelson who birdied two
of his last three holes. Finishing in third place was Jim Thorpe with a second round 66 for an 11-under-
par 133. Leonard Thompson took fourth place with a 68 for a 10-under-par 134 total. Four strokes off
the lead was Tom Watson with a 135 while Fred Gibson and Doug Tewell finished one stroke back with
136s. Eighth place was shared by Dave Eichelberger and Ed Dougherty with 7-under-par 137s. Dougherty
carded a second round 69 and Eichelberger a 70. Gary McCord took tenth place with a 70 for a 6-under-
par 138. The defending champion, George Archer, shot a 74 for a 7-over-par 151 total.

In the final round Larry Nelson shot a 66 for a 19-under-par 197 total and the win. Nelson earned his
twelfth Senior Tour victory and $240,000. Finishing in second place a stroke off the lead was Jim Thorpe
with a final round 65 for an 18-under 198 total. Ed Dougherty and Bruce Fleisher took third place with
14-under-par 202 totals earning them $107,000 apiece. Dougherty shot a final round 65 while Fleisher
birdied his last two holes for a 70. Fifth place was shared by Gary McCord and Leonard Thompson with
12-under-par 204s for $71,000 each. Allen Doyle took 7th place with a final round 66 for an 11-under-
par 205 and $57,000. Finishing in eighth place were Doug Tewell and Tom Watson with 206s while Dave
Eichelberger and Fred Gibson shared 10th with 208s. George Archer, the defending champion, shot a
final round 68 for a 219 and $12,750.
