| In the first round of the 2000 AT&T Canada Senior Open Championship George Burns shot a 7-under- par 65 for the lead. Burns first nine consisted of a hole-in-one on the 174-yard 2nd and a birdie on the 5th. At the turn he was 3-under-par and closed with birdies on the 12th, 13th and 18th. Second place was shared by Hugh , Ed Dougherty and Walter Hall with 6-under-par 66s. Baiocchi was at even-par through 11 holes but then birdied the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th, and eagled the 14th, while Hall eagled the 18th for his spot in second. Leonard Thompson and Doug Tewell finished in fifth place with 5-under- par 67s. Seventh place went to John Bland, John D. Morgan, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Jenkins and Tom Wargo with 4-under-par 68s. Nicklaus was playing in the Championship for the first time in five years and had a lot of the fan's support. Jim Ahern, the defending champion, finished at 2-under-par 70 along with six other players. In the second round Tom Jenkins shot a 68 and Leonard Thompson a 69 for 8-under-par 136s and the lead. Jenkins birdied the par-5 18th for his spot in first place. Finishing a stroke back was Hugh Baiocchi with a second round 71 for a 7-under-par 137 total. Bruce Fleisher and DeWitt Weaver finished in fourth place, both with second round 69s for 6-under-par 138 totals. Fleisher finished with a double bogey after hitting into the trees and being forced to hit his second shot left handed. Sixth place went to Jose Maria Canizares, Ed Dougherty, Doug Tewell and Howard Twitty with 5-under-par 139s. Jack Nicklaus finished with three others at 3-under-par 141. Nicklaus started with bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd holes then birdied the 14th but bogeyed the 16th. Nicklaus birdied the 18th to the crowd's delight for a second round 73. In the third round Tom Jenkins held onto his spot in the lead with a 70 while Bruce Fleisher moved into his spot in the lead with a 68 for a 10-under-par 206 total. Fleisher sunk a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th for his share of the lead. Doug Tewell finished in third with a third round 68 for a 9-under-par 207. Ed Dougherty took fourth place with an 8-under-par 208 total and Kermit Zarley finished on stroke back at 7-under-par 209 for fifth. Sixth place was shared by Andy North and Leonard Thompson with 6-under- par 210s. Jack Nicklaus and DeWitt Weaver took eighth place with 5-under-par 211s. Nicklaus had a good run of birdies on the back nine hitting the 12th, 14th and 15th, but bogeying the 16th, for a third round 70. The defending champion, Jim Ahern, shot a final round 71 for a 2-over-par 218. In the final round Tom Jenkins shot a 68 for a 14-under-par 274 total and the win. Jenkins made a 10- foot birdie on his final hole for $217,500 and his second PGA Tour victory, first on the Senior PGA Tour. Kermit Zarley shot a final round 66 for a 13-under-par 275 total and second place. Zarley's closing 66 equaled the low round of the day and earned him $127,600. Third place went to Doug Tewell with a 12- under-par 276 while Bruce Fleisher took fourth with a 10-under-par 278. Hugh Baiocchi took fifth place with a final round 66, also tying the low round of the day, while Ed Dougherty, Leonard Thompson and Tom Wargo shared sixth with 8-under-par 280s. Jack Nicklaus shot a final round 72 for a 5-under-par 283 total and his share of fourteenth place. Last year's winner, Jim Ahern, shot a final round 72 for a 2- over-par 290 total earning him $8,519. |
